The Middle East/United States Playwright Exchange is an ongoing reciprocal opportunity for playwrights from the Middle East-North Africa-Gulf region to interface with US playwrights—particularly those of Middle Eastern origin. The aim of the program is to introduce their work to the larger Lark community, our theatrical partners, and New York audiences, through public staged readings.

THE CONFESSION by Wael Qadour

translated by Hassan Abdulrazzak
directed by Tea Alagić

After Jalal’s services as an officer are abandoned by the regime during years of stable government control in Syria, he takes to spending his time with his nephew, a promising theater director named Omar. Omar is preparing a new play based on Death and the Maiden by Chilean-Argentine playwright Ariel Dorfman, when Jalal is asked to return to service after an uprising in the country. The offer awakens in Jalal an old desire for power, a feeling he’s tried long to forget.
